Chapter 11: True Bearer

My head felt terrible when I woke up. It felt how I imagined it would feel the morning after a night of heavy drinking. I opened my eyes slowly, dreading what I would see. I was lying on my side on the floor, my feet tied together although, strangely, my hands were free. Jon was standing over me. He looked over his shoulder and said, “She’s awake.”

Ignoring the pain in my head, I jerked my upper body upright and swung my legs around in front of me at the same time so I was sitting up. Mord appeared on one side of Jon, a fully conscious Morgan on the other. Awake, Morgan was still beautiful, but she had a sulky pout and a permanent little frown, which made her remind me of a child that had just been denied its own way. I half expected her to start stamping her feet at any moment. She also had a sickly look to her. In fact, she looked how I felt.

“Hello again, Harry,” said Mord, grinning widely down at me.

“How long was I unconscious for?” I demanded.

“About ten minutes.”

I managed a small smile. “Jack Lloyd will be here soon,” I told them.

Mord frowned at me. “Lloyd is dead,” he hissed.

“Well, he’s mighty talkative and irritating for a dead man!”

“So what if he is alive?” said Morgan. She had a low, musical voice with a hint of petulance in it that matched her expression. “He won’t be able to use the True Heart either. It will come down to muscle, and we’ve got six men left alive downstairs. How many does he have?”

I kept my mouth shut and settled for glaring at them. Mord’s grin returned.

“I take it that means he doesn’t have as many as us, if he is alive,” he said. “Now, Harry, I need you to be a reasonable girl, and hand the True Heart over to me.”

“And why the heck would I do that?” I exploded.

“Because it is impossible for anyone but you to remove it from around your neck.”

“So?”

Mord sighed and rolled his eyes. “I will try to put it delicately. Alive, you could be slightly useful to us, Harriet. You could cause trouble for Lloyd - if he is alive - and the king. So we would prefer to keep you alive, but we don’t have to. And we would have no trouble removing the necklace if your head had been removed first. Do you see where I’m heading with this? Or beheading, should I say.”

I glowered up at his grinning face sullenly. “So that’s why you left my hands free?” He nodded as I reached up to undo the clasp of the chain. “We’ll get it back, y’know,” I told him. I removed the necklace and held it out for him, staring at it forlornly.

“No, you won’t,” disagreed Mord, holding out his hand expectantly. “Because there won’t be a True Heart to get back.”

My stomach lurched with fear at his words and I tried to close my hand on the True Heart, but Mord was too fast.
